Resolution against Sri Lanka: India wants way forward based on accountability says Singh
In a letter to DMK Chief M Karunanidhi, India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has emphasised the need for an investigation into human rights violations charges.
The letter dated March 12, 2012 says the Indian government attaches high priority to the safety of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka and has urged the Sri Lankan government to put in place a process of resettlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction including an early return of all internally displaced persons and early withdrawal of emergency regulations, investigations into allegations of human rights violations, restoration of normalcy in affected areas and redress of humanitarian concerns of all affected families.
With regard to resolution in the UN Human Rights Council sponsored by the US, Prime Minister Singh states in his letter that India is engaged with all parties in an effort to achieve an outcome that is forward looking and that ensures that rather than deepening confrontation and mis-trust between concerned parties, a way forward is found on issues related to accountability and reconciliation.
Mr. Singh assures the DMK Chief that India’s objective is as always to achieve a future for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka that is marked by equality, dignity, justice and self respect.
